Sussex County Inmate Custody Overview
Delaware runs a unified correctional system. The Delaware Department of Correction states that all correctional facilities and institutions in the state fall under State jurisdiction. That removes the usual county jail roster from the picture. Sussex County does not maintain a public jail log through the Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Robert Lee's office serves court papers and runs sheriff sales of property under court order. It does not book, house, or release inmates. Anyone who calls a Sussex County resident asking for cash to clear a warrant is part of an active scam pattern the Sheriff has flagged on its own page.
Inmate custody data for Sussex County charges lives with DOC. The agency supervises a statewide population in the 4,500 to 5,000 inmate range, plus roughly 13,000 probationers in community corrections. The Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown is the main DOC prison serving Sussex County and surrounding areas, but the lookup process is the same for any DOC facility. CourtConnect, the state's online docket system, shows the case file. It does not confirm where the person sleeps tonight. For custody location, release date, and notifications, the right tool is VINELink.
How to Use VINELink for Sussex County Inmates
VINELink is a free public search. There is no account needed to look up custody status, though notification sign-up does require contact details. The interface starts with a state map. The user picks Delaware and then runs the search by name or offender ID. A look-in to the VINELink state selection page shows the standard entry point used to reach the Delaware DOC custody index, and the same page lets victims register for alerts in several channels. Confirming the right state up front avoids hits from inmates in other state DOCs with the same name.
The follow-on profile gives custody status, facility, and (if the person has a scheduled release) a projected date. The Delaware DOC Locate an Inmate page routes users to VINELink and warns that the listed date is not a fixed event. Good-time forfeiture, post-Level V transfers to work release, and holds from another jurisdiction can move that date. That caveat matters more than the tool's interface.
The locator page is short on purpose. It hands off to VINELink and lists the warnings that apply to any release-date entry. Print the offender ID number from the first result if the same name returns more than one match.
- Open VINELink and choose Delaware from the state selector.
- Enter the inmate's last name, first name, and date of birth if known.
- Review the list of matches. Sort by facility to spot SCI Georgetown placements.
- Click the offender profile. Note offender ID, custody status, facility, and any release flag.
- Register for phone, email, SMS, or TTY alerts if custody status may change.
VINELink Search Fields for Sussex County
The public portal accepts a small set of fields. The required ones depend on the search path. A name search needs at least a last name. An ID search needs an offender or booking number. Sussex County users should pick Delaware as the source state every time, even if the inmate has prior out-of-state custody.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| State | State selector | Yes | Choose Delaware from the map or dropdown to reach DOC data. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Partial last name returns broader results. |
| First Name | Text | No | Helps narrow common surnames. |
| Date of Birth | Date | No | Useful when multiple inmates share a name. |
| Offender ID / Booking Number | Text | Alternate to name | Provided by the arresting agency or shown in CourtConnect. |
| Agency / Facility Filter | Dropdown | No | Filter to a DOC facility such as Sussex Correctional Institution. |
| Notification Sign-Up | Web form | No | Phone, email, SMS/text, or TTY notification channels. |
What a Sussex County Inmate Profile Shows
A VINELink profile for a Delaware DOC inmate is leaner than a typical county jail roster page. There are no mugshots, no bond breakdowns, and no individual charge lists in the public view. The profile centers on custody status. That is enough for victims and family to track location. Court fields and charge fields belong with CourtConnect, not the custody portal.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Name | Legal name as recorded by Delaware DOC at intake. |
| Offender ID | State ID assigned by DOC; used for follow-up calls or mail. |
| Custody Status | In custody, released, transferred, or escaped flag. |
| Facility | The DOC institution holding the person, such as SCI Georgetown. |
| Projected Release | Estimated release date if scheduled; subject to change. |
| Registering Agency | Source agency reporting custody to the VINE feed. |
| Notification Options | Channels available for the public to register alerts. |
Note: Charges, bond, mugshots, and full booking sheets are not part of the VINELink profile and must be pulled from CourtConnect or court clerks instead.
Sussex Correctional Institution Contact Information
The Sussex Correctional Institution is the DOC facility most often associated with Sussex County inmates. It opened in 1931 and is one of Delaware's oldest correctional facilities. SCI is all-male and houses maximum, medium, and minimum security inmates. A major expansion between April 1997 and April 2000 added 760 beds. Official DOC text gives two different totals for capacity after that expansion: 1,109 beds and 1,206 beds. The honest range to report is roughly 1,100 to 1,200 beds.

Programs at SCI include education, vocational training, work assignments, religious and spiritual programming, and Road to Recovery, the in-prison therapeutic community for substance abuse treatment. DOC's mail-to-inmate page covers what may and may not be sent to people in SCI custody. The agency posts mail rules separately from visitation, money, and phone account rules.
The mail guide should be checked again before sending letters, books, or photos. Rules on staples, Polaroids, and packages change with vendor changes and security advisories.
From Arrest to Sussex County Custody
Arrests in Sussex County are made by Delaware State Police, town police, or other state agencies. After arrest the person is presented to a Justice of the Peace Court for an arraignment, where bail is set under the rules of the appropriate court. From there the person may post bond and leave, may be held pending transfer to a DOC facility, or may move directly to SCI or another DOC institution depending on charge and detention status. A pretrial detainee may live in DOC custody for the same reason a sentenced inmate does: Delaware does not separate pretrial county jails from sentenced state prisons.
The first DOC entry is not always SCI. Intake placement can shift based on classification, medical screening, and bed availability. Once classified, the person may be moved between facilities for housing, programs, or security level changes. None of these moves shows in the court docket. They show in VINELink. That is why even a CourtConnect docket review needs a parallel VINELink lookup to confirm where the person is.
SCI Visitation Schedule and Rules
SCI visits run by appointment. The DOC visitation page lays out the steps and the restrictions. The biggest rule for new visitors: scheduling is done by the visitor, by phone, one full week in advance. Walk-up visits are not allowed. The inmate is responsible for confirming the scheduled time with the visitor. DOC's visit-inmate page is the source for current rules.
The page also lists the security screening steps that apply to every visit. Plan to clear them before sitting down with an inmate.
| Rule | SCI Detail |
|---|---|
| Scheduling | Visitor calls one week in advance by phone. |
| Appointment | Required; walk-up visits are not allowed. |
| Arrival | Report to the front door 30 minutes before scheduled time. |
| Minors | Visitors under 18 with a parent, legal guardian, or adult age 21 or older. |
| Searches | Metal detector, pat-down, x-ray scan; K-9 drug scan possible; further search if needed. |
| Former Inmates and DOC Workers | May be denied entry, subject to Warden review. |
| Changes | Once scheduled, the visit will not be changed. |
Note: Lockdowns, staffing shortages, housing-unit restrictions, and holidays can shift visiting hours, so confirm with SCI staff the day before any visit.
Sending Money and Funds to a Sussex County Inmate
Money for commissary, phone, and trust accounts goes through official DOC channels. The DOC send-money page is the start point for all approved deposit methods. Cash, stamps, and money mailed to the facility are not allowed under the mail rules and will be returned or held. Phone and video accounts are separate from the inmate trust account and use their own vendor system.
The deposit page lists current vendors, fee ranges, and posting times. Posting time matters when the funds are needed for a phone call the same day or for a court financial obligation with a deadline.
Federal, Sex Offender, and Out-of-State Searches
Not every Sussex County inmate is in state DOC custody. Federal defendants held under U.S. Marshal authority show up on the federal locator. The BOP Inmate Locator covers Bureau of Prisons inmates and is searchable by BOP number, DCDC number, FBI number, INS number, or by name. Federal pretrial detainees may not show in BOP until a designation is final.
The locator does not show charges or release plans for federal inmates either. For docket detail use PACER. For local registered sex offenders use the Delaware State Police Sex Offender Registry, which is searchable by name and by neighborhood location.
